How it works

  1. Step 1

Drop, paste or choose a JPEG, PNG or WebP image. It opens in this tab and is never uploaded.

  2. Step 2

Pixelate the whole image, or choose “Parts I select” and drag over each area to censor. The strength slider sets the block size.

  3. Step 3

Download the pixelated image or copy it to your clipboard. The saved copy has no location or camera data.

Block size that fits the picture

Strength sets the block size as a share of the image, so it looks the same on a small screenshot and a 12-megapixel photo. On a 4,000-pixel photo, blocks run from 16 pixels at 1 to 160 pixels at 10.

Censor just a part

Drag boxes over faces, number plates, screens or name tags and leave the rest of the picture untouched. Every box gets the same block size.

Your image stays on your device

The image is pixelated in your browser, not on a server. The page’s security policy blocks it from sending files anywhere.

Pixelate, blur or a solid box?

All three hide detail, but they suit different jobs. Here is when to use each one.

Effect Best for Watch out for
Pixelate Best for The classic censored look for faces, number plates and screens, and retro pixel-art effects. Watch out for Small blocks over short text (a PIN, a house number) can be guessed. Use big blocks or a solid box.
Blur Best for Faces, backgrounds, whole images, anything where the result should still look like a photo. Watch out for Large text under a light blur can stay partly readable. Turn the strength up for text.
Solid box Best for Names, account numbers, addresses: anything that must be unreadable. Watch out for Looks heavy-handed in a photo. It’s in the screenshot redactor and face blur tools.

Questions

How do I pixelate part of an image?

Drop the image here, choose “Parts I select”, and drag a box over each area. Click a box to remove it, then download.

How do I make the pixels bigger?

Move the strength slider up. Each step adds the same amount: on a 1,000-pixel image, blocks grow from 4 pixels at strength 1 to 40 pixels at 10.

Can pixelated text be un-pixelated?

Sometimes, yes. With small blocks over a known font, tools can match the blocks against guessed text and recover it. Use large blocks, or a solid box, for passwords, numbers and names.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser and the image is never sent to a server.

Does the pixelated image keep my location?

No. The image is redrawn when you save it, so it carries no EXIF data, GPS location or camera details.
